It is well-understood that internships represent unique opportunities for students to gain exposure to work settings while at the same time begin to apply concepts and theories from academic course work. There are two opportunities for W&L business majors to earn academic credit through University-sponsored internships.
The Washington Program combines the practical experience of a political internship in Washington, D.C., with academic study. Offered during Spring Term, the Washington Term is designed to enhance students' understanding of national politics and governance as it affords deeper insight into the processes and problems of government at the national level.
Also offered during Spring Term is the New York Program in International Finance and Commerce. The New York Term is an intense internship experience involving several components. Students intern in firms or government offices in New York, with past placements in areas such as Internal Auditing, Investment Banking, Portfolio Management, and Tax Research. Placements have been at Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, UBS, East River Development Alliance, Lehman Brothers, Marsh & McLennan, New York City Office of Tax Policy, and Tiger Management. Interns also participate in a 6-credit seminar conducted by faculty featuring several guest speakers. Interns may also have the opportunity to continue as part of their firms’ standard summer internship program.
Many other students develop or find their own internships.
Unfortunately, like many
other colleges and universities,
W&L is unable to grant academic credit for this kind of work experience.
