In keeping with current trends in business and accounting education, the accounting department encourages majors to study abroad for a term or more, mostly in their junior year. While the students now doing this are comparatively few, nonetheless the number is quite steady each year. Some majors go overseas in the spring term of their junior year as members of an economics class in supervised studies abroad. Others have been to study, on their own initiative, in various countries, including in recent years the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Egypt. Several of our accounting majors graduate each year with a second major in a foreign language. The accounting department is most ready to rearrange course sequences to accommodate students wishing to avail themselves of opportunities for study overseas.
Study abroad is strongly encouraged by the Business Administration Department – indeed, many members of our faculty, having studied and taught overseas, know firsthand the many benefits of international education. Given the growth in students pursuing study abroad opportunities, the Business Administration Department has adopted guidelines regarding the criteria upon which credit will be granted for students taking business courses as part of study abroad programs. These guidelines balance student interests in a wide variety of programs with the role of the faculty in assuring the quality of courses taken abroad. Accordingly, as highlighted in the guidelines, students seeking approval of business courses as part of a study abroad program should do a fair amount of preliminary research before they meet with faculty to discuss their interests and options.
