VITAE

A native of Australia, Professor Dean has been a member of the W&L faculty since 1984. He was formerly a member of the faculties of Southern Methodist University and Michigan State University. His experience also includes consulting for two national accounting firms and a national bank. In 1999, while on sabbatical from W&L, he was a visiting fellow at the University of Western Australia, and in 2004 he was a visiting professor of management at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Professor Dean teaches courses in Management and Organizations, Human Resource Management, and Leadership Themes in Classic Films. In spring term 2006, he led a study-abroad course to Ireland. Twenty-six W&L business students studied Ireland’s rise to a major economic power in the European Community. In addition to classroom lectures, they visited with business leaders and explored the unique culture, history, and literature of Ireland.

His research interests include organizational choice and organizational commitment. He has published articles in such diverse journals as the Journal of Applied Psychology, HR Magazine, and Accounting, Organizations and Society. His research interests also include issues related to work and family. With five children Roger and his wife, Kay, have a continuing program of research in the laboratory and in the field.

Professor Dean has served his profession as a national committee member of the Society for Human Resource Management and as a member of an examination panel of the Human Resource Certification Institute.

In recent years, Professor Dean has been active in a variety of community organizations, including being a member of the Personnel Advisory Board for the Commonwealth of Virginia, vice president of the Commonwealth Alliance for Children, School and Families, and Sixth District representative on the State Central Committee of the Republican Party of Virginia. He currently serves as a deacon and treasurer of Grace Presbyterian Church in Lexington.
