Professor Garvis joined the W&L faculty in August 1998. His prior professional experience includes the practice of law in the areas of business failure and bankruptcy. He teaches Strategic Management, International Operations Management, E-Commerce Management, and Statistics. In Spring Term 2005, the International Operations Management course will be offered as part of the Spring Term in Asia Program, which Professor Garvis is directing with Professor Robin Le Blanc of the Politics Department.
Professor Garvis recently started the Corporate Governance Project, which is engaged in the collection and dissemination of governance data for small to medium publicly held firms. In addition to corporate governance, his past research interests include entrepreneurial collaboration and business bankruptcy. As a graduate student in the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, Professor Garvis was awarded the Suojanen Research Excellence Award. He is a member of the Academy of Management and the Academy of Legal Studies in Business.
Professor Garvis is active in a variety of community activities, including service as a Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 180, Campus Campaign Coordinator for the Lexington-Rockbridge United Way, and tubist for the Rockbridge Community Orchestra. He is also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Since Professor Garvis and his wife, Natalie (a local business consultant), have three children, what used to be his free time is now devoted to coaching and youth transportation management.
